Unlock your comedy in improv with mapping and framing

Most of us want to be funny. Yes, we want to play great scenes, make great art, and be wonderful actors, and sensitive and supportive colleagues. But most of us want to be funny too.

This workshop will show you there’s no contradiction in these aims. In fact good acting, commitment and believability will only help us be even funnier. We’ll focus on two essential skills that generations of comedians and writers have used to get laughs. We’ll analyse how those skills work, and how as improvisers we can be ready and able to put them into practice. And we’ll practise and laugh, and practise some more.

Come and find the inspiration of being a better actor, and the joy of being a better comedian.

Workshop includes:

  • Mapping: doing one thing, like something else

  • Framing: surprising the audience with context

  • Analysing sketches: finding exactly what makes the very best sketches work

  • Commitment: ultimately, if it’s not serious, it’s not funny, so let’s knuckle down!

Workshop is for improvisers with at least one year of experience!

Ο εισηγητής

Dan Ryan is a London-based improviser, coach and teacher. After doing his first improv show in Slovenia in the late nineties, he co-founded Barcelona Improv Group in 2011, before joining Ripcord, London’s first freeform team, in 2014. He performed and taught silent improv with Maybe Lex, was a member of the Nursery’s deconstruction team, and most recently played with Parkin, the Nursery’s first house team, and Soundcheck, the show of amusing musical musings. An experienced host of jam and performance nights in real life and online, he has been teaching, coaching and leading workshops for over ten years.

He has performed at festivals in Barcelona, Athens and London, and has trained with the FA, the Nursery, C3 and Hoopla, working with instructors from American theatres such as UCB, Second City, iO and Annoyance, and European groups such as L’Oignon and La Carpe Haute. His biggest passion is organic freeform as developed by Kevin Scott, and by ImprovBoston under Will Luera.

As a teacher he strives for fearlessness and theatricality, while being sensitive to the needs of the quietest person in the group, and above all aims to spark what he loves most: inspiration and playfulness. He believes there is always something new and exciting to unpack in the basics, and nothing beats practice, practice, practice.

Dan is also a journalist, chef and mixologist.
